Like it’s predecessors, MoW, features fully destructible environments, a vast array of weapons and equipment to play around with, a well developed ballistics system, and a “direct control” feature which essentially turns the game into a top down tactical shooter. As the title suggests, the gameplay is primarily small, squad based engagements but the action during larger engagements will often play out like Blitzkrieg. Men of War:Assault Squad 2 is the spiritual successor to Soldiers:Heroes of WW2 and Faces of War. If you’re looking for strategy and tactical depth, look no further. With a staggering sense of scale and large unit counts, this title truly provides a division level command experience. The morale feature can be a little wonky but it is integrated well into the overall balance of the game. The tactical depth is like the old SS games but with the additions of player guided reinforcements and an amazing “front-line” mechanic. This is by far the best real time (tactical) strategy game I’ve played all year.

Steel Division is a successor to Eugen’s acclaimed Wargame series set in WW2. Two titles I can recommend that provide experiences similar to previous entries in the Blitzkrieg and Sudden Strike series are Steel Division:Normandy 44 and Men of War:Assault Squad 2. If you’re not expecting a true successor to the series, nor a real time tactics experience, then I can recommend SS4, otherwise invest your money elsewhere. The scale of operations is significantly reduced both in unit count and battlefield size and thus firing ranges have been dialed down to accommodate for the sake of game balance and the default camera height fully zoomed out it’s akin to COH. The game itself is beautiful and certainly hold it’s on in that department but I often found myself disconnected from battlefield due to a combination of sound design and mechanics. Without going into too much detail, for better or worse SS4 plays like a more feature rich but, not as “tight” or engaging Company of Heroes. While I was disappointed by both titles I’d say SS4 is the better choice of the two.Ĭan I make a suggestion outside the bounds of these two games? As a longtime fan of both of these series I have to say that they both are heavily divergent from their predecessors, they may be enjoyable in their own right, but a much different experience nonetheless.
